Sovana

Sovana, a small medieval village located about 10 km from Pitigliano, is a must-visit destination for those exploring the Hillside Maremma.

The tombs, dating back to the 7th century BC, bear witness to the presence of groups of shepherds and farmers, likely among the first to inhabit these lands.

Monumental tombs from several centuries later constitute an important Etruscan necropolis in the vicinity of the village.

The village is arranged along a road delimited on one end by the ruins of the fortress and on the other end by the Cathedral.

The heart of the village is represented by Piazza del Pretorio, where the most important buildings overlook: the Archivio Palace, the Captain’s Lodge, the Burbon Palace, and the Church of Santa Maria.

The Church of Santa Maria represents a small gem, as small as it is unique in its beauty. Dating back probably to the 12th-13th century, the Church is divided internally into three aisles, with predominantly Romanesque architecture, and it also preserves several Gothic elements.

At the end of the village, stands the mighty Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, which represents the most important monument in Sovana. It is accessed through an avenue lined with cypress trees.

It was built on top of a pre-existing church, of which the marble portal and the ancient Crypt still remain.

The current Cathedral, with its architecture and decorations, seems to date back to the 11th-12th century.
